Working in the NDIS can be tough...But this course might help...

If you're an allied health professional, this course will provide you with a range of strategies you can use to manage these common situations that you might encounter in an NDIS caseload:

1. When the referral lacks detail

You may be thinking, isn't this often the case? Well maybe, but it doesn't have to be! If you go out for an initial visit with a client with minimal information, you are placing both yourself and the client at risk. This scenario will help you feel confident that you are as prepared as possible for the visit, and whether or not you should be taking on the referral in the first place.

2. The client needs everything, now!

Many NDIS clients have complex needs and when you first see them, they have a huge ‘to-do’ list where everything seems to be a priority and you’re not sure where to start. This scenario will help reduce the overwhelm by giving you some practical strategies to set client-centred priorities, even when everything seems urgent, and will help you tick-off both short and long-term tasks from your list.

3. "Just write me a letter..."

I'm pretty sure most allied health professionals working in the NDIS have experienced this at some point; a participant or support coordinator asks you to write a letter for a particular support, often a piece of AT, even though you haven’t previously been involved in the prescription process. While your immediate response will be frustration, a big fat 'no' or mild panic because you're not sure what to do, there is a way to approach this so that reaching the best outcome for the client stays at the front of your mind.

4. Wait, is that my role?

There could be times where you feel like you are asked to work beyond your scope, either the scope of your health profession or the scope of your own abilities. These requests could come from the participant, a support coordinator, or even your employer. These can be stressful experiences. They can also be risky for yourself, the client, and your company's reputation. This scenario will explain why you shouldn't do it, and give you some tips for handling the situations tactfully.

5. When a complaint is made

This is probably one thing all allied health professionals will fear - that a client will make a complaint about the quality of your work. Complaints can range from a client who is a little frustrated and you get a bit of a verbal blast during a face-to-face session, right up to someone making a formal complaint against you with the NDIS or AHPRA. This course won’t go into those serious complaints in too much detail, but we will cover some general strategies that will help you manage complaints if they do occur, as well as help you to provide the best quality service possible, to avoid complaints being made in the first place.

Clare, with this course you've really set the industry standard. I've completed just about every course on FCA for OT's out there and this is by far the most in-depth, presented in such a systematic and clear way - the effort you've put into making this course is abundantly clear, and honestly I'm so grateful that you've created this to kindly share with your professional network. This course gets a solid 5/5 for me - thank you so so much! :)

Anonymous Occupational Therapist

As a busy practice owner, I’ve absolutely loved having this resource available for my new grads . Even though I’ve got plenty of my own guides and sample FCA reports to share with them , what I lack is time to sit down and go through these step by step to make sure they truly understand the process. The 8 hours worth of online learning has been a massive investment for me and a valuable resource for my team. Thank you Clare Batkin!

Clare has been an invaluable resource for me as a new graduate OT - I regularly check her business page: Your OT Tutor and have recommended my colleagues do the same for easy to digest updates and tips! Clare has gone out of her way to assist me with my CPD portfolio and provided me with such a helpful template to use (a life saver!). Clare is extremely helpful, approachable, and very responsive despite her busy schedule.

Kumar Ebenezer - Occupational Therapy Practice Owner - Guided Support Services

Clare has done a fabulous job with spearheading 'Your OT Tutor', a journal club that has really helped me stay up to date with the current evidence on topics directly relevant to my practice. Her approach is comprehensive yet practical, given how time-poor clinicians often are, and I am very much looking forward to our 2023 sessions. I highly recommend Clare to other OTs - those starting out as well as others who are more established in the profession - she is an absolute asset to both.
